WORD STUDY – THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD : Yaman ימנ

Psalms 77:10: “And this is my sickness, the years of the right hand of the most high.”

The right hand of God is the word yaman which expresses a close friendship of God, sharing your heart with Him and He with you. It is sharing your secrets with Him as He share His divine revelation with you. The ancients believed your heart was found in the palm of your right hand. So to be held in the right hand of God was to be held close to His heart.

So why is the writer saying the right hand of God is a sickness or in Hebrew a chalah which is an emotional saddness? Just as when you share your heart with a friend and they share their heart with you, if your friend’s heart is broken and sad, you also feel a brokenness and sadness. When you are close to the heart of God you begin to feel not only his pleasure but His pain. You begin to feel his heartbreak over the sin and suffering of this world. Just as you would do anything you could to relieve the pain in your friend’s heart, so too would you do whatever you could to bring relief to the pain and suffering of God’s heart by sharing His love with others. I Peter 4:13.
