HEBREW WORD STUDY – QUEEN OF Heaven: Melekath Hashamim

Jeremiah 44:17 “We will certainly do everything we said we would: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had plenty of food and were well off and suffered no harm.”

Who is this Queen of Heaven. Scholars and archaeologist agree she was considered to be the wife of God Jehovah who gave birth to a son Tammau. She is believed to be the goddess Asteroth, know by many other names including Asharah, Venus and Anat. Pouring out drink offerings meant pouring wine and having a little orgy in the name of worship to Asteroth. Basically Jeremiah was commanding the people to return to a true worship of God. But the people of Israel said: “Hey, when we worshipped God we almost starved to death. But when we worshipped the Queen of Heaven we had plenty.

What that shows is that religion for these people was only for what you could get from it. People follow religions and show their dedication to the various gods for one reason, to get something, some blessing, some prosperity, eternal life etc. The God Jehovah of Christianity and Judaism offers something that the god of other religions do not offer – love. Other gods have to buy their devotion and worship. God Jehovah does not have to purchase my love. He does not have to dangle prosperity, good health, great relationships and a heavenly home. I will love Him even if poverty and poor health comes. As Andre Crouch once sang: “If heaven was never promised to me, it would still be worth having the Lord in my life.”
