WORD STUDY – COMFORTER
John 14:16: “And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever.”
Comforter:  Greek – paracleton: Counselor, advocate, helper, comforter, guide. Literally from para for alongside of and cleton to summon or call. Comforter: Aramaic – paraqleta: Comforter, one who saves or encourages.  Literally from  prag for  to save.

When you read this in our English translations it would seem that this Comforter would be another person, a separate entity.  This, however is not in keeping with Semitic thought particularly when we are speaking of the unity of God.
It is that word “another” that would suggest a different person.  In the Aramaic the word “another” is ‘haran.  Haran is similar to the Hebrew word ‘achar which means to leave behind. In the Aramaic the idea is that Jesus is saying that He will leave his Spirit behind  which would abide with them and be with them just as he was presently with them.  Only this time He would be with them to comfort them or act as an advocate with them.

This is meant for all continuing generations.  Jesus is paracleton, or alongside of us today, calling us, comforting, and encouraging just as if He walking beside us in the flesh. He is paraqleta,  there to save us and be by our side for eternity.  In the flesh he could only be in one spot at one time, but in the Spirit he can be at 6 billion places at the same time, personally encouraging each one of us as if we were the only person on this earth.  Nothing can be more comforting than that.
