WORD STUDY – WAIT
Isaiah 40:31: “But they that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.”
Wait – Quavah: to bind, to wind, twist, to be strong, a strong cord or rope.
There are a couple words in Hebrew which are rendered as wait. In Isaiah 40:31 the word that is used is “quavah” which does not really mean wait as we in the 21st Century would consider wait. The word has it origins in the making of rope. Even today we use the ancient form of making rope by binding hundreds of strands of fabric together. Each strand of fabric is easily broken on it’s own, but when bound together with hundreds of other strands, it becomes unbreakable.
The picture in Isaiah 40:31 is not one of sitting back and twiddling your thumbs while waiting for God to show up. It involves a process of binding yourself to God. The more of yourself you bind to God, the stronger you will become.
